Hilary Crowell

Maker, Owner at The Cultivated Thread

Visited: May 4-6, 2023

Hilary Crowell is owner and weaver at The Cultivated Thread, a small-batch weaving studio in mid coast Maine creating handwoven wearables and home goods. Her journey from farmer to weaver informs the rich, playful collection of colors that come out of her home studio in the form of hand towels, table runners, scarves, and more. Hilary’s towels, woven with organic and U.S.-grown cotton, are designed with the rigors of daily use in mind.

Most of the year you can find Hilary and her goods at craft markets around the state of Maine, and her towels are stocked in several wonderful stores in the region.

*This event is free and open to everyone who wants to visit
- no registration required.

Hilary will be in the shop May 4-6:

Thursday 11am - 5pm
Friday 11am - 5pm
Saturday 11am - 5pm

Since Hilary is normally weaving in her home studio, this is a rare chance to see her at work with her loom! Hilary will be working on a run of towels throughout her visit, demonstrating the weaving process, and answering visitors’ questions. The work of making cloth by hand takes many, many steps and we’ll get to see one of the key activities in action.

Woven goods from The Cultivated Thread will be available for purchase throughout Hilary’s visit! With Mother’s Day right around the corner, she’ll also bring a collection of her staple Pantry Items. You can create your own gift box from our shop and we'll package it, wrap it and send it for you. Leave a message to them at checkout and we'll include it in a handwritten note, as well!
