Date & Time: March 21-22, 2026 9:00am - 5:00pm both days
Total Cost of Class is $280
In this two day class we will create wooden spoons for everyday cooking and kitchen tasks. This spoon carving course is paced toward first-time spoon carvers. It would also be a great option for someone who has tried their hand at the craft and is looking for a class setting to refine their process, learn new techniques, and ask lots of questions. No experience with hand tools is necessary, though a willingness to work hard, stay focused while using sharp tools all day, and create a welcoming group learning environment where everyone can try something totally new will be essential.
Greenwood spoon carving involves using hand tools - saw, axe, knife - to harvest, split, and shape fresh wood gathered from the landscape around us. We will begin with a saw and carving axe to select and shape greenwood into rough spoon shapes. We will explore a variety of knife grips using both straight and hook knives to refine our spoons and hollow their bowls. The majority of our time will focus on safe technique and efficient hand tool processes for shaping spoons and developing the skills and knowledge of wood needed to create smooth surfaces.
Tool safety and selection, techniques for use, sharpening, and maintenance will be discussed for each tool type we use in our projects.
Each participant can anticipate completing one spoon over the two days, though we may start additional projects as time allows. Importantly, each person should leave with the knowledge necessary to carve many more spoons at home. Spoon carving is a wonderful craft that you can explore in lots of places and all throughout your life. Come carve with us!
Class runs 9:00 am to 5:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday, with a 1 hr mid day lunch break. Students should pack a lunch each day or plan to walk to one of the tasty lunch spots here in the village.
NOTE: I am offering both a 2-day and 3-day versions of this class this year. The 2-day class is the core spoon carving class that I have instructed the last couple of years. The 3-day class is simply an extended version, with an extra day to give students time to ask additional questions, iterate on process and spoon design, and dive a little deeper into tool sharpening or other spoon related topics.
No prior experience is necessary to participate. All tools and materials are provided; students are encouraged to bring their own tools along to class if they have them. Class is appropriate for participants age 16+. Any participant under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult also participating in the class. Spoon carving does require sustained effort and dexterity with both hands and includes both standing and seated work. If you’re unsure whether this class is the right choice for you, please reach out with any questions prior to registering or to discuss any needed accommodations. Class limited to a maximum of 5 participants.
